Scrapping a car in the UK is a straightforward process, but there are a few important documents involved. Getting the paperwork right protects you legally — particularly when it comes to notifying the DVLA that you are no longer the registered keeper.

The V5C Logbook (Vehicle Registration Document)

The V5C is the most important document when scrapping a car. It is the official record of the vehicle's registered keeper, and you need it to legally transfer responsibility for the car.

When you scrap your car with an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) like EasySalvage, the driver will help you complete the relevant section of the V5C on the day of collection. The ATF then notifies the DVLA that the vehicle has been scrapped.

What if I have lost my V5C?

You have two options:

1. Apply for a replacement V5C from the DVLA (V62 form, costs £25). This takes around 6 weeks by post, or you can do it online via the DVLA website.
2. Scrap without a V5C — some ATFs will accept a car without a logbook, but you should notify the DVLA yourself using the online service at gov.uk. You will need the vehicle's registration number and your details.

Proof of Identity

You will need to show valid photo ID when scrapping your car. Acceptable forms include:

• Driving licence (full or provisional)
• Passport
• National identity card

This is a legal requirement under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, which was introduced to combat metal theft. Reputable dealers are required to verify the identity of anyone selling a vehicle.

Proof of Address (Sometimes Required)

Some dealers may ask for proof of address, particularly if the address on your ID differs from the registered keeper address on the V5C. A recent utility bill or bank statement is usually sufficient.

The Certificate of Destruction (CoD)

This is not a document you need to bring — it is one you will receive, but only if your car is being scrapped (crushed and recycled). If you are selling your car for salvage — meaning it will be broken for parts or repaired and put back on the road — a Certificate of Destruction will not be issued, because the vehicle is not being destroyed.

When a licensed ATF scraps your vehicle, they are legally required to issue a Certificate of Destruction. This is sent to you (and to the DVLA) and confirms that:

• The vehicle has been scrapped
• You are no longer the registered keeper
• You are no longer liable for road tax, insurance, or any future offences committed with the vehicle

If your car is sold for salvage rather than scrapped, you should still notify the DVLA that you have sold the vehicle. Complete the relevant section of the V5C and send it to the DVLA, or use the online notification service at gov.uk. This removes you as the registered keeper and protects you from any future liability.

It is also worth noting that if a salvage buyer strips parts from the vehicle before it is eventually scrapped, a Certificate of Destruction will still not be issued until the shell is processed by a licensed ATF. Until that point, the DVLA notification you made when you sold the car remains your only protection.

Keep your Certificate of Destruction safe if one is issued. It is your proof that the car was legally scrapped.

What Happens to Road Tax?

When your car is scrapped, any remaining road tax is automatically cancelled and you receive a refund for any full months remaining. This happens automatically once the DVLA is notified — you do not need to do anything separately.

Cancelling Your Insurance

Do not forget to cancel your car insurance once the vehicle has been collected. Contact your insurer directly — you may be entitled to a partial refund if you are mid-policy.

A Quick Checklist

Before your car is collected, make sure you have:
