Can I Scrap a Car That Does Not Run?

One of the most common questions we get at EasySalvage is: "My car won't start — can you still collect it?" The answer is always yes. We buy non-runners, accident-damaged vehicles, and cars with all kinds of mechanical faults every single day.

Here is everything you need to know.

What Counts as a Non-Runner?

A non-runner is any vehicle that cannot be driven under its own power. Common reasons include:

  • Flat or dead battery — the car will not start
  • Engine failure — seized engine, blown head gasket, timing chain failure
  • Gearbox or clutch failure — the car starts but cannot be driven
  • Accident damage — structural damage, airbags deployed, written off by insurance
  • Flood damage — water ingress to the engine or electrics
  • Fire damage — partial or total fire damage
  • Seized brakes or suspension failure — the car cannot move safely

All of these are vehicles we collect regularly. You do not need to do anything to prepare the car — just let us know the situation when you get your quote.

Does a Non-Runner Affect the Price?

Honestly, less than most people expect. The scrap value of a car is primarily based on its weight and the current scrap metal price — neither of which changes because the car does not run.

Where a non-runner can affect the price slightly is in the cost of collection. A car that drives onto the truck is quicker and easier to load than one that needs to be winched or pushed. This may be reflected in the quote, but it is rarely a significant difference.

What matters much more is whether the car is complete. A non-runner with all its parts intact — engine, gearbox, catalytic converter, body panels — is worth considerably more than one that has been stripped.

How Does Collection Work for a Non-Runner?

When you book a collection with EasySalvage, just tell us the car does not run and describe the issue. We will bring the right equipment:

  • Flatbed recovery truck for cars that cannot be driven at all
  • Wheel skates and winch for cars that are stuck or immovable
  • Jump leads for flat battery situations (sometimes we can get it started)

Our drivers are experienced recovery professionals. They will assess the situation on arrival and load the vehicle safely, whatever condition it is in.

What About Cars in Awkward Locations?

We collect from driveways, garages, car parks, and roadside locations. If the car is in a tight spot — a narrow driveway, a multi-storey car park, or a garage with a low roof — let us know in advance and we will send the right vehicle.

If the car is on a public road and causing an obstruction, it is worth contacting your local council before arranging collection, as they may have already issued a notice.

Accident-Damaged and Written-Off Cars

If your car has been written off by your insurance company (Category S, N, A, or B), you can still sell it to us. In fact, many insurance write-offs still have significant scrap or salvage value.

  • Cat A and Cat B write-offs must be crushed — they cannot be repaired or put back on the road. We are a licensed ATF and can legally handle these.
  • Cat S and Cat N write-offs can be repaired, but many owners choose to scrap them rather than deal with the hassle. We buy these too.

Tips for Getting the Best Price on a Non-Runner

  1. Be honest about the condition — an accurate description means no surprises on the day and no last-minute price adjustments
  2. Do not strip the car — removing parts before collection reduces the value
  3. Keep the catalytic converter — it is worth more in situ than removed
  4. Have the V5C ready — or let us know if you have lost it and we will advise
